Katdid Konversation With Cobalt

Welcome to another great edition of Katdid Konversation!

I am your host, Kitty Mojito!

Today, my guest is a good buddy from North Carolina! Please say hello to Cobalt, a very spunky and hip 4 year old Siamese kitty!

KM: Welcome to the show Cobalt! I am so excited to chat with you today! Shall we start by learning a bit about your history? How did you come to find your human?

C: I came to find my human through Siamese Rescue. My human had lost her Siamese kitty named Henry and was looking for a pair of kitties. She saw me and my brother on the Siamese rescue website and automatically knew it was meant to be. I, at the time, had a pretty bad leg infection known as “Septic Elbow”. Nobody wanted to adopt me because of my bad leg. But my human knew we were the perfect kitties and even travelled 6 hours with a family member who is allergic to cats to check and see.

KM: That is so nice of your human to come so far to get you! Describe a day in your life.

C: I wake up the humans at 5:50am every morning for food. I meow and nudge at them to get up. Next, I meow and run downstairs once the humans finally get up to feed me. I meow more and nudge the human’s leg while the wet food is being opened. I gobble up my wet food and eat any leftovers my brother or sister may have left. Then, I jump up on my favorite brown chair and put my missing leg over the chair arm and watch the human sister eat breakfast. I get up from the chair, play with my catnip toys and my light up crinkle tunnel. I meow at the human to let me out on to the catio. I hiss and protest when the humans leave and I have to go back inside. Then I nap and eat my dry food while I wait for my humans to come home. I meow at the humans when they come home. I sleep and go on the catio while they do homework. I meow for dinner. I follow the humans downstairs for TV time. I sleep some more and then repeat again next morning.

KM: Wow you have really gotten your routine down to the T! That is very impressive! What do you REALLY think of your human?

C: I really love my human and would do anything to make her happy. I even let my human cry on my fur when she has had a bad day.

KM: Aww that is so nice of you Cobalt! It is so nice when we can make our humans feel better isn’t it? What is your most favourite kind of food?

C: My favorite kind of food would have to be Blue Buffalo Healthy Gourmet Chicken Flavor in Meaty Morsels

KM: If you had to choose one toy to play with, what would that be?

C: It would have to be the Petlink Mystery Motion Electronic Cat Toy

KM: That sounds like fun! I must tell Mama to look into that! How would you describe your sense of style?

C: I have always been a meowdel since I was a kitten and like to accessorize and show off my tan fur and missing leg with cat feather toys, scarfs, bow ties and just going as the handsome model I am!

KM: Well, I am sure those lady kitties will be just throwing themselves at you when they see your meowdelling skills! What are your thoughts on dogs and other animals?

C: I DO not like dogs at all as I only have three legs and get scared of them. I love and get along with other cats just fine. Sometimes, I play wrestle with my brother and sister but it’s all in good fun!

KM: If you could make one wish, what would it be?

C: If I had one wish, it would be to get all the special needs kitties and kitties deemed unlucky or un-adoptable to all find wonderful homes like I did!

KM: That is a wonderful wish Cobalt! Do you have any special skills?

C: Indeed! I do have a special skill. My special skill is waking my humans up at inappropriate hours for petting and treats. I also have some pretty sick dance moves.

 

KM: Can you show me some moves? (Cobalt busts a few, amazing moves….. Applause!) That’s fantastic! You are an amazing dancer! Considering the political climate today, how do you feel about more cats getting into politics and making the world kinder?

C: I feel like cats getting into politics and making the world kinder is a wonderful idea. The world is filled with too much hate and negativity and I believe that if kitties were to get into politics that the world would be a happier and cuter place!

KM: That is so true. We are definitely a better species to run this world! Instagram is a great place to make friends. What do you like/ don’t like about social media?

C: I like being able to meet and interact with new kitties. I do not like how Instagram turns into drama sometimes (mostly out of the Cats of Instagram community)

KM: Do you have a special someone in your life?

C: I don’t currently have a special someone in my life but I used to have a beautiful special kitty and her name was Precious.

KM: If you were to go on a date, what would a perfect day/night look like?

C: A perfect date night for me would be going out to dinner with my special ladycat. After dinner, we would lay underneath the stars and watch an outdoor movie showing of ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’. My perfect date night would end with my beautiful lady cat, eating Temptation treats.

KM: You are such a romantic! What would you like to accomplish in the near future?

C: In the near future, I would like to spread the word about how awesome special needs kitties are and even if we are missing a leg or an eye, we are just as loving and should be adopted into forever homes. I hope to accomplish this and help special kitties like me get adopted.

Fighting Feline Dental Issues!

A few weeks ago, Miss. Kitty had a vet appointment for her yearly vaccines! She was a great little patient and didn’t even flinch when she got her shots. Her weight was perfect (same as last year! Vet said I am a great cat mommy! Yay!), her coat is exceptional and her overall health is great! EXCEPT………. for some plaque on her back teeth!

OK, OK, it’s not as bad as I am making it out to be! During last year’s check up, Kitty had some plaque. I was advised to try brushing and use some dental treats to keep it from getting worse or look into getting her teeth professionally cleaned. This year, it is still the same. Luckily, it has not gotten worse, thank goodness! However, now I am being a bit more proactive in getting her used to the brush!

So, in this post, I am going to give a few tips to anyone who is interested in trying to brush their felines teeth!

First thing is to find a toothbrush that your cat will tolerate. I have tried the ones that you put on your finger but I found that those are not as effective as an actual toothbrush. No cat wants your finger in their mouth!

I got this toothbrush and toothpaste at the vet office. The brush has soft bristles and the toothpaste is poultry flavoured. Both got two paws up from Kitty! DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE! Please check with your vet or local pet store to get a toothbrush and paste made especially for cats!

Before you actually attempt to brush, let the cat get accustomed to the toothbrush. I would let Kitty just bite on it and get used to it being close to her mouth. Then, I would put a bit of paste on the brush and have her lick it and taste it. She will try to chew on it which is great because she is slowly getting used to the toothbrush!

The problem area for Kitty is her back teeth. You can probably see the plaque! This is not an easy place to try to brush. She is more comfortable having her fangs brushed than me trying to get to that pesky back teeth!

It is very important to keep the cat in a comfortable position. For Kitty, it is sitting on my lap. I would  hold her very gently and lift up her lip to reveal the teeth that needs to be cleaned. With a very calm and gentle hand, slowly rub the brush on the teeth. You can massage the gums gently as well.

Do not put pressure on the neck or hold on too tight. You know your kitty the best so as soon as you feel that they are getting stressed, stop what you are doing. Leave it for another day!

In the photos above, you will see that I am holding her neck VERY gently. It is just enough to support her head while I get those teeth cleaned.

You will soon learn that you can’t brush it all in one go. So take your time and focus on the problem areas first. Kitty tries to bite on the brush and I let her do that as much as she wants. Then, I brush a bit more. It is never more than a minute or two at a time.

Patience is key! Try to brush a bit everyday, even if it’s just one small spot. Use slow, gentle rotations. Kitty is a very patient cat so I have had better luck with her. If your kitty is not too enthusiastic at first, give them a dental treat and let them go on their way. Try again tomorrow!

It is important that you keep trying. Not many pet parents pay much attention to the health and condition of their pets’ teeth until something serious happens. Be proactive and pay attention to their dental health. Watch for bad breath and bleeding gums! Talk to your vet about it at your next appointment. Dental issues will cost you thousands of dollars so best catch things before it gets to that point.

As always, make sure your kitty is on a healthy diet and has access to lots of fresh water. Avoid food and treats that have artificial flavours and colours. Look for all natural, crunchy treats and use them in moderation. Dental treats are not a substitution for a good cleaning routine!

Katdid Konversation With Wallace

Good morning pawsies!

It’s a beautiful Sunday to have a chat with a wonderful furriend!

Please say hello to Wallace, a brave and adventurous cat! Wallace is currently going through some health issues but it doesn’t stop him from living his best life! I am so honoured to have this chat with him!

An Introduction by Wallace

Wallace Pepperspray is my given name stated on my documents. My Daddy calls me ‘hound dog’ because he thinks I act more like a dog than a cat. 16 years ago, I found myself at the city animal shelter. The young guys working intake named me Wallace. They told humom that I needed a dignified, “big” name to fit my big personality. I met my humom at the shelter. She was the Animal Control Officer of our city at the time. Pepperspray came into play because of a couple of silly reasons. Before I was neutered, I would spray any and everybody, looking for someone to call my own. I have black spots on my skin and fur, mixed in between some of my tiger stripes. Humom used to carry pepperspray for work. After I was neutered, they stopped calling me that.  When my humans created my social media accounts, I became known as Hounddog Wallace. I also have several nicknames.

Age : Unknown. I’ve never told my humans. They rescued me almost 16 years ago. The doctor guessed I was between 2-6 when I met my forever family. It’s understood I’m at least 17.

Hometown : Kenosha, WI

KM: Thanks so much for joining me today Wallace! It is a great pleasure to be able to have this chat with you! Let’s start by talking about how you found your forever family.

W: I was picked up off the mean streets and brought to the shelter. Humom worked for the city as the Animal Control Officer. When we met, I was in the infirmary. When she’d walk through, I would stick my paw out of the cage door and cry my saddest song in hopes of catching her attention. I met my Daddy when I got home.

KM: I am so glad you got her attention and she took you home! Describe a day in your life.

W: Blessed. I start and finish my days feeling safe and loved. I never know exactly what new adventure awaits us but we have them everyday. I go all over town, meet new people and visit interesting places.

KM: You definitely have the most interesting life! I love following your adventures! What do you REALLY think of your humans?

W: I love them, unconditionally!

KM: Aww! You are just too sweet! What is your most favourite kind of food?

W: Broiled wild salmon steak.

KM: That is some great taste in food you have! If you had to choose one toy to play with, what would that be?

W: My ice fishing rod, with the correct string tie on the end. No toy attached to the “hoodie” string, just that.

KM: How would you describe your sense of style?

W: Timeless. Classic. Cool.


KM: What are your thoughts on dogs and other animals?W: I try not to think about them. I had traumatic experiences with both cats and dogs as a youngster. I’ll tolerate them and stand my ground. I’d much rather be in the company of humans. I’m cool and even curious about all other animals.

KM: If you could make one wish, what would it be?

W: I could live and spend time with my Team Wallace longer.

KM: Oh we all wish the same thing for you. You are such a kind soul and we all want you to be here with us for as long as you can. Do you have any special skills?

W: Many. After I went deaf, I learned sign language. I swim, hunt and fish. I can open doors and play fetch. I enjoy riding in my bike basket and boats without a harness or leash. When I was younger, I would skateboard. I’m good at sledding and enjoyed it last winter. My most special skill is that I can bring smiles to people’s faces. Even bringing joy to those that aren’t “cat people”. If I look at my humans a certain way, I can get them to do anything for me.

KM: Wow! You have so many amazing skills, Wallace! What do you value most in life?

W: Love… giving and receiving.

KM: Considering the political climate today, how do you feel about more cats getting into politics and making the world kinder?

W: I’m all fur it. The world needs more kindness.

KM: Instagram is a great place to make friends. What do you like/ don’t like about social media?

W: Team Wallace and I have had an amazing experience with it. The only regret would be that my silly humans set up my Facebook account as a human page instead of a “fan”, nonhuman page. We had the account for at least 18 months before it was taken down. We completely lost hundreds and hundreds of contacts, photos and art. Team Wallace was hurt and pissed by that and hasn’t gone back yet. That’s why I went to an IG account. I still have my YouTube channel. Check it out ‘Hounddog Wallace’.

KM: I will definitely be checking out the YouTube channel! Do you have a special someone in your life?

W: My humans are very special and mean the world to me.

KM: If you were to go on a date, what would a perfect day/night look like?

W: Calm, cool and relaxed.

KM: What would you like to accomplish in the near future?

W: I am the president of The HoundDog Rocketry Club. The engineer is working on the HoundDog2 rocket now. We have our class 1 certification so we can build bigger, faster, go higher. I hope for a successful launch before the weather turns.

KM: You never stop doing amazing things! That is just fabulous! Do you have anything else you would like to say?

W: Even though the doctors have given me only 3-6 months to live, I will fight on. Every day has been a blessing and I am very grateful for what I have been given. Katdid Konversation With Lando

Hello furriends!

Welcome to another great edition of Katdid Konversation with your host, Me! Kitty Mojito!

Today I am talking to a very special furriend of mine! Please say hello to Lando! He just turned 2 yesterday, September 9th!! He tells me his hometown is Mos Eisley on Planet Tatooine (Nomadic)!

KM: Welcome to Katdid Konversations Lando! Before we start, I would like to wish you a very Happy Birthday! I hope you had a wonderful day with your family. Shall we start by talking about how you came to find your human? 

L: I was born to a feral mother in Fresno, CA and at one month old, I was cold and scared so I climbed into the warm engine bay of a car. The next morning, that car drove to the county fair with me still in it. The person who owned the car heard me when they arrived. I thought they would help me but instead they pulled me out and tied me to a chain link fence just high enough that I couldn’t get down. A really nice woman and her children heard me crying and rescued me from the fence. First they took me home but their dogs didn’t like me and my savior was scared that they would hurt me. So she took me to the place where she got her dogs fixed. They don’t take stray animals and told her to take me to the shelter. She knew that if she did that it would be a death sentence for me. In Fresno and most of California they automatically put down black cats from the end of September to the first week of November. My savior called a friend who put her in touch with a rescue that my Humon volunteered with. The rescue called my Humon to ask if they would pick me up from her. The Humon agreed and asked where they were and the rescue said that she was in the parking lot of the Spay/ Neuter clinic. It just so happened that the Humon was sitting in the very same lot waiting to pick up Master Skywalker who was getting spayed. The savior was actually parked two cars over and the Humon went to their car. My savior pulled me out of an old dog bed and as soon as the Humon saw me, they knew that I was meant to be with them. I was big for my age and they thought I was two months old. I was a big, black fluff ball and covered in oil and break dust. After they retrieved Master Skywalker, they took me to their home, cleaned me up, and we’ve been together ever since.

KM: Oh my! What a story to start off with! It is just heartbreaking that so called ‘shelters’ put down black cats (or any cats!) just like that. Describe a day in your life.

L: Nap in da sun or behind da monitor. Eat breakfast and smack around da Padawans for a bit. Take a nap in da shade in da afternoon. Have a midday snack of either whatever da Humon is having for lunch or Temptation. Climb my favorite tree and smack da Padawans around some more. Take another nap in da sun. Beat up my BroFur Finn and run around chasing da Padawans. Help da Humon eat their dinner, den sleep behind da monitor. Once the Humon goes to bed, I plot world domination.

KM: That is one busy day you have going on! What do you REALLY think of your human?

L: Dat they belong to me and dey are da best Humon minion a cat could ask for.

KM: What is your most favorite kind of food?

L: Sheba cuts!  I won’t eat any other brand! Temptation treats, cheddar cheese, chicken and tuna, goat’s milk anything.

KM: OOh sounds delicious! I have never had this Sheba cuts before! They sound yummy! If you had to choose one toy to play with, what would that be?

L: My BroFur

KM: Haha! You are too funny Lando! Not sure how Finn feels about being your toy! LOL! How would you describe your sense of style?

L: I’m sexy and I know it.

KM: Definitely! What are your thoughts on dogs and other animals?

L: Well I mez Papa is a pug so I be good with almost all doggiez. I really, really hate birds! Dey only be good for eating. Az long az dey know I iz in charge I iz good wit other catz.

KM: If you could make one wish, what would it be?

L: Dat da Humon could raise enough money to start dare Sanctuary so dat other Black and Feral Cats dat are not az lucky az me can be saved and have a safe place to live out dare lifez.

KM: That is a very special wish indeed! I think if we all help spread the word about it, we can help the Humon raise the much needed money. The sanctuary sounds like an amazing place. Do you have any special skills?

L: I iz a Je’Daii and Iz usez mez mind tricks to control da Humon.

KM: Oooh ! Mind control!! I don’t have that kind of skill sadly! What do you value most in life?

L: My Humon and my BroFur Finn.

L: Iz meet mez girlfriend, Tilda on IG so dat be mez most favorite ting. Dat people usez it do harm be mez least favorite ting.

L: Mez girlfriend Tilda, she be the SisFur of @godric_and_jojo_show. Mez favorite ting about her iz her eyez and her fierce attitude. She’z got lotz of spunk and iz strong enough to control her BroFurz. Her Meowmy iz da Humon’z pawtner in saving unwanted kittiez. Datz how wez meet.

KM: If you were to go on a date, what would a perfect day/night look like?

L: Dat be between mez and Tilda. Diz cat be a gentlecat and dare are sometings dat Iz just don’t share.

KM: Fair enough! You don’t want to ruin any surprises 🙂 What would you like to accomplish in the near future?

L: In da nearest future, another nap but after dat I’d like to help change how peoplez see Black Catz. Show dem our beauty and dat dare superstitions are unfounded. In many placez in diz big world, Black Catz be good luck not bad luck but in America, people still believe dat wez be bad. Black Cats be the most overlooked and unwanted catz and kittenz of all da different color of catz. Black and Feral Cats are da first to be euthanized in shelters all across da US. Diz will only change when people realize da uniqueness and beauty of both typez of catz.

L: Adopt don’t shop and pick a Black Cat or Kitten because you will be saving a life and getting da best companion youz could ever ask for.

KM: That is so important! Never shop! Always adopt! There are so many animals in shelters, desperate for a forever home! Lando, thank you so much for chatting with me! You and your human does so much life saving work! We are all very proud to call you friends 🙂

A Visit To The ‘Cat Cafe On Whyte’

A Cat Cafe…. In Edmonton………! Finally!

A cat lover’s dream come true!

It was so exciting to finally get to visit the Cat Cafe on Whyte since it opened it’s doors early this year!

Located on Whyte Avenue, a hip and happening area in Edmonton, the Cat Cafe is hard to miss, with it’s bright yellow signage and the most adorable cats staring at you through the large window as you walk by!

As you walk through the main door, you are greeted by the cheerful cafe where you are treated to the most adorable cat merchandise  as well as specialty drinks and treats!

I’ve tried a few different items off the menu during visits to the cafe and my favourite so far have been the Strawberry Acai Refresher and the macaroons! They are a must try! Even if you don’t visit the cat lounge, the cafe is a great place to just chill, catch up on some emails or relax with a good book!

Now on to my favourite part! THE CAT LOUNGE! The admission to the lounge is $15 and it is the best $15 I have spent!

After a short read up on the rules and a quick clean of hands, you are now ready to mingle with the kitties. One of the first things I noticed is how wide and open the space is! The kitties have so much room to run around and play!! Everything is set up for the maximum comfort of the cats!

If you are a cat lover, this is definitely your domain! There are so many cats with various personalities that are just waiting to hang out with you!

You can tell that the cats are happy to be exploring, playing and interacting with the visitors! The best part is that all the cats at the cafe are adoptable through SAFE TEAM RESCUE www.safeteam.ca

Katdid Konversation With Bella

Welcome back to Katdid Konversations! 

I am your host, Kitty Mojito!

After taking a break for a few weeks, I am back with a great guest to kick off the Fall edition!

Please say hello to Bella, a one year old tuxedo from Hertfordshire, Watford!

KM: Thanks so much for joining me today Bella! Shall we start by learning how you found your human?

B: I was adopted from a breeder.

KM: Describe a day in your life. What do you do on a daily basis?

B: Every day, I would wake up my human at exactly 6:30AM due to my food
requirements. When my service goes to work, I have my beauty sleep for a
while and wake up later to entertain myself while watching all these
humans walking past MY house. Furthermore, I would keep guard of any pests
and make sure the plants in the house are trimmed exclusively by fabulous
me.

KM: That is a lot of responsibility for a one year old! What do you REALLY think of your human?

B: It can be quite slow to understand my needs, but training goes well and it’s
starting to understand me a bit more.

KM: That’s good! They sure do need time don’t they? What is your most favourite kind of food?

B: What kind of question is that?? We all know that my favorite is…TUNA!

KM: My, my, you are a feisty one aren’t you? If you had to choose one toy to play with, what would that be?

B: Definitely…MY STICK. I love it because it’s cheap and easy and fun to play with. Also, I like to play fetch with it (Human says I act like a dog. How dare she!)

KM: I can totally relate! I love playing fetch too! How would you describe your sense of style?

B: I was born a model! I love wearing bows and bandanas. Also my signature accessory is my pink collar!

KM: What are your thoughts on dogs and other animals?

B: Well, I’m an indoor cat so I have not met a dog yet, but I like watching birds and chasing flies – it keeps me entertained.

KM: Bird watching is definitely fun! If you could make one wish, what would it be?

B: Gourmet food every day, because it pleases my valued taste buds.

KM: I hope your human is reading this! Maybe she will have some gourmet food ready for you! Do you have any special skills?

B: I can play fetch! I think that is my talent, as the human says that not many cats can do that! It’s mostly a dog specialty.

KM: That is true, It takes a lot of skill to play fetch! What do you value most in life?

B: Sleeping.

KM: Considering the political climate today, how do you feel about more cats 
getting into politics and making the world kinder?

B: I strongly agree that cats should have the right to vote and unite with humans to bring the community back together and fight hate and terror. Our opinions matter!!

Review – Weruva BFF (OMG-Oh My Gravy!)

I’m so excited to be given this opportunity to try this brand new product from one of my favourite pet food companies, Wevuva!

Before I found Weruva, I have tried so many different brands and types of wet food with not much luck. One thing I did find out is that Kitty Mojito loves gravy based food! So my mission was to find her the best quality wet food out there and I found that in the B.F.F line!!

If your cat has any of these, you might want to consider changing their diet:

>> Is your cat picky? Picky eating is usually a problem with texture, since cats are carnivores whose tongues and teeth are perfectly evolved for meat-eating. It’s easy to see why a cat might dislike something without real shreds of meat—would you eat a steak with the texture of tapioca? I am a very fussy pet mom who spends a lot of time researching pet food and reading labels at the pet stores. It is very important to me that my pet eats quality food. It could cost $0.50 a can or $3 a can, all that matters to me is that the list of ingredients are filled with the nutrients that Kitty actually needs.

Of course, the taste test is the most crucial. Kitty just gobbled up the BFF OMG as soon as I put it in her bowl! Her favourite so far is the ‘CRAZY 4 U’ chicken and salmon in gravy and ‘DATE NIGHT’ which is duck and salmon in gravy!

As I shared about this on Kitty’s Instagram (@kittymojito), I have had several requests to let readers know about the actual texture and consistency of the products as well as how Kitty reacted to it.

Here are my thoughts (along with Kitty’s great taste testing skills!) on some of the flavours we tried!

Product: SEEYA SOONER – Chicken and Tuna dinner in gravy

Verdict: The consistency was great. It was quite runny so it’s wonderful for kitties that love gravy based food. You can still see some chunks of meat in there and the first few ingredients are chicken broth, chicken and tuna. I reduced the dry food and gave her this entire pouch in a feeding. Two paws up for this one!

PRODUCT: CIAO BABY – Chicken and Shrimp dinner in gravy

Verdict: This was an instant hit as the combination of chicken broth, chicken, tuna and shrimp was a definite winner. Like the previous flavour, you will find it has a very generous gravy base so it is very easily licked up.

PRODUCT: PURR-FECT PLANNING – Chicken, Turkey and Salmon dinner in gravy

VERDICT:  Turkey is not a favourite with Kitty. It’s a hit and miss. However, she really loved this one. It could be the fact that there was salmon in it but she ate it up in no time.


PRODUCT: LOVE MUNCHKIN – Chicken and Pumpkin dinner in gravy

VERDICT: Another favourite! I love to add pumpkin to Kitty’s food when I can because I find that it really helps with her digestive issues. It keeps her eliminations regular and normal.

 

In conclusion, I would like to say that I will continue to feed Weruva BFF Oh My Gravy line to Kitty as it is, by far, one of the best wet foods that I have come across. This is a great line of food for kitties that have trouble chewing as the gravy makes everything soft and palpable as well as for any kitties that prefer a more liquid consistency to pate!

Kitty and I give it two thumbs (and paws) up!

Pet Insurance – Yay or Nay?

I have been wanting to write about this for a while now…

Since I am on social media quite often on a daily basis, I can’t help but notice all the requests for help for pets who are ill or injured. It breaks my heart to see that money is sometimes the only thing keeping some people from getting the life saving treatments needed for their pets. They try their best but who has thousands of dollars laying around on a whim? Some treatments costs several thousands over a long period of time and this cost is not bearable for many people.

This got me thinking about insurance. I am a big believer in the preparing for emergencies. And since both myself and my husband have life insurance and critical illness insurance, why would I not look into the same thing for Kitty?

As soon as we adopted Kitty 4 years ago, the first thing we did was get insurance. She was a year old and the premium cost was around $30 a month. Sure, that was affordable and it covered a lot of ailments and injuries with the exception of any pre-existing conditions. We decided to pick Trupanion due to the previous mentioned reasons and also for the fact that they didn’t put a limit on how many times you can make a claim for the same condition and covered 90%.

Fast forward a few years……

Kitty is 5 years old now and although we never had to use insurance (knock on wood!), her premiums are now at $63 a month. Many people have asked me why I am paying so much for pet insurance. They ask me why I don’t just save that monthly $63 in a savings account for Kitty.

I will tell you why ….

  1. If I saved $63 a month for a year, I will have $756. If you know how much vet’s charge, this will certainly not be enough to cover tests, xrays, medication, vet fees.
  2. If, god forbid, Kitty has an accident and requires surgery or any extensive treatments, I will not have enough cash to cover things upfront if I didn’t have insurance.
  3. The $63 is a price I will gladly pay for my peace of mind knowing that if something were to happen, I will not have to compromise on getting her the treatments she needs. Her well-being is worth far more to me.

To anyone who is still not sure about getting insurance, I say please do some research and get the coverage that works for your pet. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

  • Take time to do some comparisons of insurance companies. Don’t always go for the cheapest option. See what is and what is not covered.
  • Try to get insurance when the pet is young. Like human insurance policies, the earlier you purchase it, the most affordable the premiums are.
  • Don’t be put off by the premium cost. If your pet is 8 years old and the online insurance quote is $80, give them a call. They will be able to work with you to get the best coverage needed.

So, in conclusion, I would like to say that I am all for pet insurance. You can make it work for you. Even though it might seem a lot and you may not think it’s worth it, I say it is TOTALLY worth it! I have never had to use it and if I had to do it all over again, I would still pick having insurance over having none!

KM: Thanks so much for joining me today Tazz. First, I would like to welcome you to the COI family! It is so exciting that you have now found your forever home! So let’s talk about how you came to find your human?  

T: My previous person asked Meowmee to take care of me while she recovered from an accident. Then she decided I was happier with Meowmee and let me stay.

KM: Wow, that’s so great that you got to stay! I am thrilled for you. Describe a day in your life. 
T: Well, I wake up early, about sunrise, stretch a lot, demand my breakfast, take a short nap, have some Temptation treaties, watch birds, bunnies and deer out the window, enjoy the sunshine, sleep, have dinner, play on and off at different times, yowl at 3 am and sleep.

KM: Ha ha! You have your routine down to a T! Well done! I wish I was that disciplined! What do you REALLY think of your human?

T: My Meowmee is the best, considering she tries very hard to make me happy.  I do like to keep her on her toes about my food though.  A guy gets bored with the same thing.  I would have to say yes, I love her.

KM: Aww, you are so sweet. Your Meowmee is such a kind and wonderful lady! We all love her! What is your most favourite kind of food? 

T: At the moment, I like Call of the Wild salmon and trout flavor as well as the Temptations Catnip Treats.

KM: Good choices! Have you tried Weruva BFF? It is so delicious! If you had to choose one toy to play with, what would that be?

T: My Miss Mousey! She has soft fluffy hair and is purrfect to wrestle, bunny kick, bat and carry in my mouth.

KM: How would you describe your sense of style?

T: For style, I am just feeling that I need to just be for now as I am new to IG.  But I would say hip, sophisticated and trendy.

KM: In time, you will develop your own sense of style 🙂 You already look pretty dashing in the pawty circuits! What are your thoughts on dogs and other animals?

T: I haven’t really been around a lot of dogs. I would say they’re OK.  Other cats a definite yes, I want a brofur or 2 and a sisfur.

KM: I think your Meowmee will definitely be listening to that request! Fingers crossed for you my furriend! If you could make one wish, what would it be?

T: My wish would be to meet all my IG friends for real one day.

KM: Wouldn’t that be just amazing? Now Tazz, do you have any special skills?

T: My ultimate skill is carrying Miss Mousie in my mouth and yowling at the same time.

KM: That’s is quite impressive! What do you value most in life?

T: I would say food, then naps.  But Meowmee is in charge of the food so I guess it would be her, Miss Mousey is a close 2nd.

KM: How do you feel to be part of this new family?

T: I am so happy! I didn’t know how good life could be.

KM: I think the best feeling in the world is to know that you are loved by wonderful people! Instagram is a great place to make friends. What do you like/ don’t like about social media?

T: I like meeting new cats and their people, getting to express myself and being creative.

KM: Do you have a special someone in your life?

T: Yes! Actually, as of this week, Lilly (who is the Sisfur of Cobalt) is my new girlfriend.  She is a beautiful seal point Siamese with the most amazing blue eyes.  She is actually my first ever girlfriend.

KM: Wow! Congratulations! I don’t know Lilly but I know Cobalt! You two make the most adorable couple! If you were to go on a date, what would a perfect day/night look like?

T: Well I like to think I am romantic.  I would pick Lilly up and take her to a private dining room. After a delicious dinner, we could dance to beautiful music and spend the evening in each other’s arms.  Of course, I would buy her a beautiful gown, flowers and a blue sapphire necklace to match her eyes.

KM: Ah you are a romantic soul! What would you like to accomplish in the near future?

T: I want to see where things go with Lilly. I just joined her band, the PURR TONES, so I will see how that goes. Most importantly, I want to learn all there is to know about Derp Spays.

KM: I think Little Franklin will teach you all about Derp Spays! He is a great leader! Do you have anything else you would like to say?

Money, Responsibility, Common Sense!!

The past few weeks brought along a few trials that I wasn’t financially prepared for. Trying to provide for medical costs for my Dad and making sure their monthly rent is paid for along with other expenses that seem to pop up takes a toll on a person, especially someone who is not bringing in an income high enough to provide for two households.

This situation paints a grim picture of parents who spend their lives trying to fix their adult children’s problems by putting their own financial future at risk. No, this is not brave or generous. It is plain stupid!

Once your kids are old enough to have a life of their own, cut the purse strings. Focus on your own money and be wise with it. You can help out your children in other ways. I know life happens, you want to help your kids, your grand kids etc etc but at the end of the day, do you seriously think that any one of them would turn around and fund your medical costs, pay all your bills AND put food on your table for the rest of your life?  Sure, you may find a handful of golden children who would but unless you take care of yourself, you can’t depend on anyone else to do it for you (this goes for everyone!) I’m not saying this to be mean but to give you a glimpse of what life could be like if you do not plan!

I am not a parent (nor do I have any desire to be one) so I can’t speak for the whole bond between a parent and child and all that good stuff. But I do know that, as a person with SOME common sense, I would make sure that I prepare for my older years in some way and not expect someone else to do it for me.

There is a reason why they ask you to put your own oxygen mask on first before you help your child when you are on a flight! They know that you can’t really help anyone else unless you help yourself first!
