Fundraiser Update #3

Super excited to share some wonderful news about my upcoming Holiday Fundraiser!!

I have decided to make up to 10 gift boxes full of pet food, toys and treats as well as possibly adding a gift certificate to each one.

I have been in touch with several pet stores (to request some gift certificates or gift bags) and have gotten a definite YES from my local Pet Planet Winderemere and they will be providing me with some sample packs to add to the boxes!!!

I have also partnered up with ‘A Pet’s Pantry Society’, our local Pet Food Bank who have generously offered me all the pet food and treats I would need!

A Pet’s Pantry Society is a non-profit organization located in southwest Edmonton. Their mission is to facilitate partnerships with rescues to grow the community. By working with local rescues, their goal is to ease the burden created due to a lack of resources so that more funding can be directed to critical medical care.

Please check out their website http://apetspantry.org to learn about the amazing work they do and how you can support them.

I am ticking things off my checklist as I work towards making this a success.

I still have a few more things to gather (ex: large boxes, gift wrap and a few more supplies like litter, scoops and puppy pads) and I am hoping to have things ready by the end of this month and start putting together these boxes in December.

The rescues I have contacted are very excited and I hope to post some pictures as they come and get their gifts:)

I can’t wait to see how this goes!!!

Kitty On A Leash

Some people say that it is next to impossible to get a cat on a leash.

However I have come across many stories and seen many pictures of leashed cats going for walks. So I decided to put this theory to the test with Kitty. I must start by saying that it probably helps if you do this when your cat is fairly young so that they get used to it.

I bought a harness for Kitty as soon as we adopted her(She was just over a year old). I chose a harness as opposed to a collar and leash because it is safer and more secure. The likelihood of her accidentally strangling herself was much less with a harness. And I must say, never have I been more grateful for this choice as when she decided to walk through the balcony railings.

This happened when we moved to our new home and Kitty was exploring her surroundings. She is always supervised when she is out on the balcony however this one time she decided to zip past my husband and off the balcony rails. Luckily my husband was holding on to the leash but for a minute my little baby was hanging off the balcony just terrified. And because she had a harness, not a collar, her weight was equally spread out so she was not being choked!!

We got her back up within seconds and she was clearly shaken but since then she has never tried that again! Lesson learnt I guess….

A few tips for anyone thinking of introducing a collar or harness to a cat.

  1. Use a harness NOT a collar when putting on a leash. It could save your cat’s life.
  2. Never leave them unsupervised when they are on a harness and leash. They could easily get tangled up in something (furniture etc) or worse.
  3. Make sure the harness is not on too tight. Practice the two finger rule. If you can’t slip through two fingers under any part of the harness or collar it is too tight.
  4. Measure your cat before you buy a harness. Or better yet, take them with you to the store and try it on.
  5. Cats are unpredictable, especially if you are walking them on a leash. So have a good hold of the leash so that they don’t dash.
  6. Be extra vigilant when you are out with your cat. Take a cat carrier with you just in case you run into trouble (dogs, other animals) so that you can get your cat to safety.

There you go! If you have any other tips you would like to share, please leave a comment 🙂

Care For Some Grass Anyone?

Kitty is a little obsessed with eating plants……

Last year, my mother in law bought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers and the minute I set it down on the table, Kitty pounced on it… Even thought I tried to keep her away from it, she managed to chow down some flowers. Needless to say, all this happy eating ended up in a pile of puke on the carpet a few hours later.

Since then, I have never brought fresh flowers indoors.

When we go out for a walk, she happily grabs mouthfuls of whatever it is that is growing out there. So no surprise,we don’t go on walks out to the garden too often now.

So I had to figure out a safe way to give her an opportunity to dig around in the dirt and eat some grass…

Voila!

Cat Grass!

According to the many articles online, Cat Grass is a name used to describe different types of grass which are popular with cats. The most popular type of cat grass is Avena sativa, or the Common Oat.

Unlike catnip, cat grass doesn’t induce a high in cats. There is no definitive answer as to why cats eat grass but some theories out there suggest that they act as a laxative and helps with the passage of hairballs through the system. The research also suggests that it might provide certain vitamins and nutrients your cat is lacking and sometimes eating grass can induce vomiting, which helps the cat bring up hairballs(source: www.cat-world.com.au)

After having done some reading on this, I purchased a grow-it-yourself kit from the store. Unfortunately this didn’t work out so well. The plant wouldn’t grow even though I followed the instructions and eventually Kitty ended up pulling out all the roots and playing with the dirt.

My next option was to try to grow this from scratch. So I purchased some good quality soil, a bag of seeds and a large container in order to get this done. A week or so later, I could see the bright green grass beginning to sprout and soon, they were long enough for Kitty to enjoy them.

Every morning she goes out on to the balcony to enjoy her yummy treat. She slowly learnt not to pull them out by the root and now she just takes a bite off the top.

Look at her enjoying this bountiful harvest !:)

Bubble Play!

I love the weekend!

There is nothing greater than not having to wake up to an alarm.

It’s the only time that my hubby gets to sleep in and one of my favourite things to do is to wake up a bit early and make him french toast with maple syrup, whipped cream, caramelized fruits and fresh orange juice. And since he is getting a special breakfast, I have to give a special breakfast for Kitty as well. Usually she gets to try some new treats or a new flavour of wet food as she sits with Daddy to have breakfast:). She loves it.

Another fun thing we try to do on weekends is introduce Kitty to new play things. This weekend, I introduced Kitty to bubbles. Yes, good old-fashioned soap bubbles.

She was a bit shocked to see the strange little things floating about .. It took a little time however soon enough she was running about and trying to swat at the bubbles. It was the cutest thing ever and she wouldn’t stop long enough for me to snap a photo.

If you are to try this with your cat, just make sure that you don’t get any bubbles on their bodies. You don’t want them eating soap!

Pawlicious Food!

We are on the constant lookout for fresh, healthy food… Then why do we not think twice about giving our pets the best? Do they not deserve fresh food without chemicals and fillers?

I am constantly researching the safest and healthiest cat foods to feed Kitty and have tried many different varieties so far.

I started with Blue Buffalo, Organix, Merrick, Wellness… anything that was advertised as the next best thing.

Eventually I stumbled upon Orijen. It was locally made, with real ingredients and no fillers. Kitty loved it as her dry food.

For wet food, I found nothing better than the Weruva BFF and TruLuxe line. Not only was in grain free, it was also free of carrageenan which is a thickener added to most human and pet foods. Some studies show that this could be a possible carcinogen.

The best thing about this line is that when you open the can, you can actually recognize the food that is in it. There are chunks of meat, salmon, duck and lamb, shredded chicken and flakes of tuna and some vegetables as well. Kitty only eats the gravy kind and not the pate.

I think it’s so important to take time to read the list of ingredients on each item of food you buy for yourself as well as your furbabies. After all, we are what we eat

What do you feed your precious furbabies? Leave a comment and let me know.

The Inspiration behind the Blog

As I work my way through getting this project in order, I thought I would introduce you all to the inspiration behind the creation of this blog.

She joined our little family almost 3 years ago and have been the love of our lives ever since!

Please say hello to Kitty Mojito Burton

052

Isn’t she just the cutest thing you have ever seen? 🙂

My husband and I absolutely adore her and we spoil her rotten. She is definitely the queen of our household and as most cat owners know, we adjust our life around her.

I will be featuring some of her favourite things in many of the upcoming posts so keep an eye out for that!
